Born into slavery as Frederick Bailey, Douglass purchased his freedom in 1845 and went on to become the greatest abolitionist of his time.
Question-- why did his mother, Harriet Bailey, give him February 14 as his date of birth? Everywere I look, it says it's not his real birthdate but his mother gave it to him as that date.
