In 1868,

Oscar J. Dunn becomes lieutenant governor of Louisiana. It is the highest executive office held by an African American to date.  

He was an ex-slave.

Like Janet said in the commercial below for Black History Month (which to me is every month) when she mentions him;  'Now What Can't You Do?'
