 in 1761,

Jupiter Hammon, born a slave in 1720, published "Salvation by Christ with Penitential Cries," the first known poetical work by a Black Person.

I will be the first to admit that it really says something about a person's inner strength or belief when, after being born a slave, he somehow remains steadfast into the fact that Jesus Christ is indeed the savior of mankind.

I always heard that slaves weren't aloud to read anything, but the bible. Then again, I guess that is enough.

You got a point, Don. I forgot that slaves weren't allowed to know how to read. That's what makes it even more impressive, that during his history, he was able to compose poetry.
