"The only benefit to conforming is that everyone likes
you but yourself. " --Paul Benjamin
It used to be important to me that I was well-liked by everyone, but focusing on everyone else gets tiring and old. And you end up losing yourself in the process. I had to find out for myself that I was alone in wanting the admiration of everyone. Not everyone was looking for the same from me. They were living their lives, doing as they pleased. I was raised to be unselfish, and to be giving, but I’m learning that being selfish isn’t so bad, when appropriate.

I think it important, but not always essential, to be liked, primarily by those important for us in Christ, and secondarily, by those we wish to reach.
I agree with you completely on this! Here is a great quote that I heard (can't remember from who..)
"The only benefit to conforming is that everyone likes you but yourself. "
