Place: Regency Mall, Racine Wisconsin
Standing behind me in line at a toy store.
Girl: Ma, I saw a dress at Macy's, that I want to wear to Chrissie's wedding.
Mother: How much is it?
Girl: Ma, it's so nice. It's red, and it's got this one shoulder thing, and it's in my size. It's got a slit up on the left side. Not too high up.
Mother: How much is it?
Girl: Ma, it looks so good on me. Ask Brianna. She said it would surely get Tony's attention.
Mother: He's outta jail, already? It's been 2 years?
Girl: Yeah.
Mother: Well how much is the dress?
Girl: It's only a hundred fifty-four dollars.
Mother: What you mean, ONLY? Girl, you know I ain't got that kinda money for no damn dress. I don't know why you wanna go to that wedding anyway. It aint gonna last. She been married twice already, and she's only what- twenty six? Joey found out that baby wasn't his and he divorced her, and remember Madu, that African guy, right? He only married her to stay in the country, and she didn't even know he needed a green card until during the honeymoon. When he became a US Citizen, he dropped her like she was hot. And she's getting married again?
Girl: Ma, I want that dress. Please, can we stop by Macy's and get it before someone else gets it?
Mother: I told you, unless that dress is self-cleaning and can walk out the closet and put itself on you, I ain't buying it. It cost too much. Target or Kmart got some pretty dresses. Maybe even Sears. You better go there instead.
Girl: Ma, when daddy left the house yesterday morning to go to work, I saw his boss sitting in his car, and as soon as daddy rode his motorcycle around the corner, I saw his boss get out of his car and walk to our front door. I heard the doorbell ring, and you answered it. He stops by every thursday morning after daddy leaves the house. I don't think Daddy knows, 'cause he complains about his boss all the time. Should I tell him?
Mother: Lets go get that dress. If you want, you can wear my ruby necklace, matching earrings and bracelet. You can even keep them if you want. Do you need shoes too?
